Walmart Gives Its Pharmacies a Bigger Role in Everyday Health

A new pilot program places trained pharmacists at the center of personalized support for customers exploring GLP 1 medicines, nutrition, and healthier routines

Bentonville, 17 September 2026 – Walmart is giving its pharmacies a broader role in customer health support through a new program aimed at providing more personal guidance. The retailer has introduced a six-month pilot in selected rural stores across the U.S., where specially trained pharmacists will serve as Health Ambassadors.

The program is designed to give customers more time to discuss their health needs and understand the services available to them. A key area of the initiative is support for people who are using or considering GLP 1 medicines. These medicines are used for certain health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and weight management.

Rather than limiting the conversation to prescriptions, Walmart’s Health Ambassadors will discuss several aspects of everyday wellness. These can include nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and other lifestyle considerations. The goal is to help customers better understand the resources available to support their individual health needs.

The pilot initially focuses on diabetes, weight management, and maternal health. Walmart is testing the program in rural communities, where access to healthcare professionals and other health resources can sometimes be more limited.

Pharmacists participating in the program will meet customers directly and help them navigate Walmart’s healthcare services. Depending on their needs, customers may be connected with services such as health screenings, immunizations, medication support, nutrition resources, pharmacy delivery, vision care, and virtual healthcare.

The initiative also builds on Walmart’s growing digital health offerings. The company has expanded its Better Care Services platform, which provides access to services such as virtual care, nutrition guidance, and weight management support. The platform is intended to provide additional resources for people using or exploring GLP 1 therapies.

Interest in GLP 1 medicines has also grown significantly in recent years. These medicines have become increasingly visible in conversations around diabetes and weight management, creating demand for information about treatment options and related healthcare services.

Walmart’s approach places pharmacists in a position where they can have longer conversations with customers than a traditional pharmacy interaction may allow. Instead of simply collecting a prescription, customers can use the interaction to ask questions and learn about other services that may be available.

The program reflects a wider change in how retail pharmacies are evolving. Pharmacies are increasingly becoming convenient access points for vaccinations, screenings, medication guidance, wellness resources, and other healthcare services.

For Walmart, the six-month pilot will provide an opportunity to learn how customers respond to pharmacist-led health support and whether the model can help connect people with appropriate healthcare resources.

As consumers look for convenient ways to manage different parts of their health, the pharmacy may become more than a place to collect medication. Walmart’s new Health Ambassador initiative represents an effort to bring personalized health guidance closer to where customers already shop and seek everyday services.
